Redesign and construction at the Rockwood/E 188th Avenue MAX Station was coordinated with the Gresham Redevelopment Commission's Rockwood in Motion infrastructure improvement projects in the Rockwood triangle area. Construction moved both platforms to the west side of 188th Avenue to improve pedestrian safety and the experience for riders, while creating a sense of place. New station elements include:

  • MAX shelters with transparent windscreens to shield riders from the weather
  • Ticket vending machines and platform furnishings
  • Improved lighting and security cameras
  • Public art created specifically for the station

The Rockwood Station improvements were funded by ConnectOregon II and the Gresham Redevelopment Commission.

About the Public Art

rendering of the art installation at the Rockwood MAX Station

As part of the revitalization of the Rockwood MAX station, signature public art was installed over the ticket vending areas.

TriMet routinely integrates art into station design. As part of the revitalization of this MAX station, art features were installed over the ticket vending areas. Rockwood Sunrise, by Dan Corson, was inspired by community interviews and research. The artist was influenced by the bold colors of the cultures represented in Rockwood and the universal symbolism of the sunrise. The brightly painted stainless steel rays of Rockwood Sunrise reach 35 to 58 feet high and span 46 to 80 feet wide. The translucent tips of the artwork are illuminated as the trains arrive and depart the station, creating a glowing visual landmark for the entire area. Rockwood Sunrise is the second artwork by Corson in the region. His work can be viewed at corsonart.com.
