Traveling on TriMet with Kids

If you're bringing children with you on the bus or train, here are some helpful tips and safety reminders:

Kid-friendly fares

  • Children under 7 ride free with a paying passenger.
  • Discounted fares are available to kids ages 7-17. More

Bringing a stroller

  • You're welcome to bring a stroller on the bus or train, but keep in mind there may not always be room on board. If you do bring a stroller, we recommend using a folding "umbrella" style stroller. Large and double-wide strollers are not practical for use on TriMet.
  • When boarding the bus, you can ask the operator to deploy the lift or ramp if you need it.
  • You may use a seat in the priority seating area by the door, as long as it's not occupied or needed by a senior citizen or a rider with a disability. Look for the "Priority seating area" sign.
  • We ask that you keep your stroller folded while on board, except on low-floor MAX trains (those without stairs at the door). This is important for the safety of your child and your fellow riders.
  • Please make sure your stroller is not blocking the aisle or door.

For your safety

Both parents and kids should keep safety in mind around buses and trains.

  • Never cross the street in front of a TriMet bus, unless it's stopped at a traffic light.
  • Be sure to cross train tracks only at designated pedestrian crossings. MAX, WES and streetcars are actually very quiet, so listen carefully and look both ways before crossing the tracks.
  • Don't run or play at the train station or near train tracks. Stay behind the white bumpy tiles until the train comes to a complete stop.
  • A good safety rule for kids is: If you have to run to catch the train, that's not your train. Be patient... The next one will be arriving shortly.

Rider rules and etiquette

It's never too early to teach good riding habits! When they're old enough, brief your child on the basic rules for riding TriMet.

Take TriMet to family fun
