Stay Safe Near MAX Green Line
Train testing and operator training is underway on the Portland Mall and along I-205
In preparation for the opening of MAX Green Line in September, light rail trains are now testing on the new tracks on the Portland Mall (5th and 6th avenues in downtown Portland) and along I-205 between Gateway and Clackamas Town Center.
On the Portland Mall (5th and 6th avenues downtown)
Bus service has returned to the Portland Mall and MAX operator training is now underway. (Trains are not accepting passengers.)
With buses and trains both running on 5th and 6th avenues, it's important to obey traffic laws and new signs and signals:
Pedestrians
Observe traffic laws by using crosswalks and obeying signals. Never cross in front of a bus, unless it is stopped at a red light.
Motorists and cyclists
Motorists and cyclists should only travel in the traffic lanes on the left of both 5th and 6th avenues. The right-side transit lanes are only for buses and MAX trains (although narrower streets north of Burnside require some bus operation in the traffic lane).
- Obey all traffic signals.
- Travel only in the left lane. Don't cross the bumpy white lane divider.
- Stay out of the transit lanes, which are reserved for buses and trains.
- Make no right turns from 5th or 6th avenue, except where allowed:
- 5th & Jackson
- 6th & Harrison
- 6th & Irving
- Do not stop in the left-hand traffic lane except as required by traffic signals.
Police are enforcing traffic laws. Violations can result in citations and fines up to $242.
Cyclists: Do not ride on or near the light rail tracks! Bike tires can become caught in the tracks. More Mall safety tips for cyclists
Along I-205 from Gateway to Clackamas Town Center
MAX trains are making test runs on the new tracks along I-205 between Gateway and Clackamas Town Center. Operator training begins June 29 and continues into August. While the trains are not accepting passengers, MAX will be running regularly.
MAX stations and Park & Ride lots remain closed until Green Line service begins on September 12, 2009.
Trains may be running any time of day or night and are quiet. Be alert near MAX trains and tracks:
- Do not trespass on tracks or at closed stations or Park & Ride lots.
- Cross tracks only at designated crossings and obey all signals.
- Look both ways before crossing tracks.
