Switching to Public Transit Saves Money
Study shows Portland transit riders can save $9,541 a year
Know why most people break their New Year’s resolutions? Because they generate more guilt than incentive to do the things we know we should. A more effective incentive might be to resolve to do things that save you money.
Take riding public transit, for example. If you’re a committed rider, you already know the benefits. If you’re an occasional user, we’re encouraging you to join the transit club and start saving money.
It's more than just the cost of gas
The latest report from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) estimates Portland transit riders can save an average of $9,541 per year by choosing public transportation over single passenger commuting. The Transit Savings Report estimates the savings based on a two-person household being able to get along with one fewer car by taking TriMet. Factored into the savings are the cost of a monthly transit pass compared to local gas prices and the cost of a monthly unreserved parking space.
In addition to all the extra money you'll have, having TriMet deliver you safely to your destination will give you the extra time you need to meet your other New Year's resolutions—relax, read more and catch up on sleep.
