TriMet recognizes Operators of the Year

TriMet announced its top MAX and bus operators for the year on Monday, May 16.
Operators qualified for the awards based on outstanding driving records, customer service and attendance, with the final choices picked by a vote of their peers.

This year, all three drivers live in the SE Portland metro area. Hardie Schoebel Jr. earned TriMet'’s top distinction as Bus Operator of the Year. Tony Antoni was chosen for light rail's top award as MAX Operator of the Year. David Dorn obtained the top honor for a part-time bus operator.

Bus Operator of the Year

Schoebel, 60, has been a TriMet operator for 38 years. The SE Portland resident drives the Line 27-Market/Main and 19-Woodstock bus lines. He's a member of the Million Mile Operator Club, having driven more than a million miles and maneuvered a 40-foot bus without a preventable accident for 30 years. Riders say he is always helpful, cheery and courteous, giving out free smiles to everyone on the bus.

MAX Operator of the Year

Antoni, 55, has been an operator at TriMet for eight years. The Oregon City resident started driving a bus for TriMet and switched to a rail operator four years ago. Antoni has had perfect work attendance for the past five years. His flawless driving record has made him an excellent trainer for new rail operators.

Part-time Operator of the Year

Dorn, 60, fills in on various bus routes served by the SE Powell Garage. The Clackamas County resident has driven for TriMet for four years and has accumulated many thank you cards from supervisors for his willingness to help out in a pinch. A rider, who is a teacher, wrote this note of commendation: "His smiling face makes me happy and cheerful before my teaching. Thank you very much!"
