Rose Quarter Bike Path Now Open
We've made it easier and safer to ride through the Rose Quarter Transit Center
Cyclists can now ride legally and safely through the Rose Quarter Transit Center via NE Wheeler Avenue, thanks to efforts by TriMet, the City of Portland, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and the Lloyd District Transportation Management Association.
We created a new bike lane, added "train warning" signs and re-routed buses to increase access and improve safety in this busy bike corridor.
The changes, which took effect October 16, 2008, include:
- a new 12-foot-wide, 2-way bike lane on Wheeler between Interstate and Multnomah
- a new "bike box" (a green box painted on the pavement to help prevent car/bike collisions) at the intersection of Wheeler and Multnomah
- electronic "train warning" signs that alert cyclists when MAX trains are crossing Wheeler
- removal of the old eastbound bike lane on Multnomah between Interstate and Wheeler (to help ensure safe bus operation along Multnomah)
- new crosswalk markings
Previously, bikes were not allowed on Wheeler between Interstate and Multnomah because of the high volume of pedestrians, buses and MAX trains passing through the area.
Some bus lines were re-routed off of Wheeler in August, making it safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
Tips for cyclists
This is a unique bikeway and its success depends on everyone following the law:
- Use the bike lane. The bus lane is for buses only.
- Yield to buses. If its "Yield" sign is flashing, slow down and let the bus go ahead of you.
- Red means stop! Even if you don't see a train, pedestrians need to cross too.
