MAX Light Rail is coming to Clackamas County!
Starting in September 2009, riders will be able to travel from Clackamas Town Center to downtown Portland in 39 minutes on TriMet's newest MAX line, the Green Line.
New tracks are being installed along I-205 between Clackamas Town Center and Gateway, and downtown on 5th and 6th avenues between Union Station and Portland State University.
Along I-205, we're building eight MAX stations and five Park & Ride lots. Stations are being designed to provide easy connections with buses. And there will be more than two thousand parking spaces for commuters and carpoolers. You'll see improvements to nearby streets, intersections and bike paths as well.
Most of the MAX route follows an existing transit right-of-way that was created when the freeway was first built. This allows for faster construction and fewer traffic disruptions.
True to its name, the Green Line is being built using sustainable construction methods. For example, we're recycling and reusing materials whenever possible. In addition to planting more than a thousand new trees, crews are installing underground devices called "silva cells" that promote healthy tree growth and filter the water that drains into nearby streams.
At each station, a unique sculpture will greet riders and help orient visitors. Shelter columns will be covered with recycled glass tile in a different color for each station. And windscreen glass will be etched with an artist-designed pattern.
Clackamas County is Oregon's third most populous county, and one of the fastest-growing areas in our region. Soon, residents and businesses will enjoy frequent and reliable light rail transit service, providing connections to work, shopping and recreation throughout the metro area.
Track construction will be complete in fall of 2008, and systems installation will follow. After a period of testing and training, MAX Green Line will open for service in September of 2009.
