TriMet's top priority is building and operating a safe transit system.

One of our lesser known safety activities is "Crime Prevention through Environmental Design." That's a fancy term that means our transit stations and Park & Ride lots are designed in a way that discourages criminal activity. Research shows most people decide to commit crimes when they believe they won't be caught.

Increasing the chance that they will be caught discourages crime and helps riders feel safe. First and foremost, stations are designed to allow people to see and be seen. Stations, walkways and Park & Ride areas are well lit.

Platform benches, signage and furniture are placed to allow open sight lines – the area is uncluttered and there are no hiding places. When possible, ticket vending machines are installed away from boarding platforms and only riders with valid tickets are allowed on the platform.

Next, TriMet uses security cameras, both as a deterrent to criminal activity and as evidence for prosecuting crimes. Closed circuit television cameras are on every MAX train and on two-thirds of the bus fleet. Cameras are installed at parking garages and elevators and at most MAX stations, with more being installed all the time.

And finally, you—our riders—play an important role in helping us keep the system safe. You are our "eyes and ears." If you see something, say something – report any suspicious behavior or a suspicious package to TriMet personnel or call 9-1-1.
