SW 11th Ave and Morrison MAX Improvement Project

Nov. 16–17: MAX Blue and Red lines disrupted between the Providence Park and Galleria/SW 10th Ave MAX stations.

MAX Blue and Red lines will be disrupted for a short distance in Southwest Portland on Saturday, Nov. 16 through Sunday, Nov. 17. Trains will not run between the Galleria/SW 10th Ave and Providence Park stations, but the only platform closed will be the westbound Providence Park platform. Both eastbound and westbound trains will stop at the Providence Park eastbound platform.

Shuttle buses will run in place of trains approximately every five minutes, but we encourage you to plan up to an extra 15 minutes for your trips through the disrupted area. You may choose to walk the short distance between trains, a little more than 0.40 mile, which takes about eight minutes.

The disruption is necessary to make a track improvement, removing an outdated switch on Morrison Street at Southwest 11th Avenue.

Regular MAX Blue and Red line service will resume on Monday, November 18.

Background

The rail switch we’re removing was part of the original Downtown endpoint of the MAX Blue Line from 1986 to 1997, a period when trains regularly used the switch as a way of turning around to head back in the opposite direction. In 1998, the MAX Blue Line’s Westside Extension to Washington County was completed, creating what remains the longest uninterrupted section of track in TriMet’s light rail system, stretching more than 30 miles between Gresham and Hillsboro. Nowadays, the switch and the original MAX turnaround at Southwest 11th Avenue and Morrison Street is typically used by extra service trains serving Timbers and Thorns games or other special events.
