TV Highway
Transit & Safety Project

We are upgrading bus service on Tualatin Valley (TV) Highway to TriMet FX®–Frequent Express. This will bring faster travel times, more comfortable bus waiting areas, plus safety and accessibility improvements, to the corridor.

Better Transit on TV Highway

  • Upgraded intersections at key locations to speed up buses, accommodate bus pullouts and create more space between the bus stop and adjacent railroad tracks.
  • Access to local and regional destinations through connections to two MAX lines, 10 other TriMet bus lines, WES commuter rail, Ride Connection and other regional bus service.
  • Faster travel times with buses arriving every 12 minutes, every day of the week, most hours of the day.
  • Bus stations near safer crossings, with shelters, seating, lighting and real-time bus arrival information.
  • Longer, 60-foot, articulated buses with greater capacity and three doors and all door boarding for briefer stops.
  • Next-generation transit signal priority that will help buses move efficiently and make the ride faster and more reliable.

The TV Highway Transit & Safety Project will bring TriMet FX–Frequent Express bus service to the corridor. Line 57, which runs along the TV Highway corridor, has the highest ridership in Washington County with around 6,400 daily trips on an average weekday as of spring 2025. Communities along the corridor often express concerns about safety along this high crash corridor and the bus currently takes much longer than driving. The new bus service will provide faster travel times, improved bus waiting areas and access to transit while providing connections to essential jobs, healthcare facilities, shopping centers, places of worship and community services.

Between 2018 and 2022, the 16.2 mile project corridor accounted for 19% of all roadway fatalities in Washington County despite making up just 0.5% of the roadways in the county. Nearly half of those deaths were pedestrians, underscoring the urgent need for safer, more accessible transportation options.

The FX line will address this need by serving many of the stops along today’s Line 57, with strategic stop consolidation to improve efficiency and to focus improvements in the areas they are most needed. It will expand transit access to 6,775 businesses and 1,349 family-supportive service sites, from schools and training centers to clinics and hospitals. The corridor is already home to thousands of families, and its population is expected to grow rapidly making safe, reliable and connected transit more critical than ever.

Route

The TV Highway Transit and Safety Project will connect Beaverton Transit Center to Forest Grove and travel through Aloha, Hillsboro and Cornelius along the way.

FX buses

The project will upgrade Line 57 to articulated FX buses, which are 60 feet long with a flexible joint in the middle. These new buses feature all-door boarding with fare readers at the front, middle and rear entrances, reducing dwell times at stops. They also provide more space for mobility devices, strollers and bicycles, improving comfort and accessibility for all riders.

In early 2025, the project's Steering Committee recommended a Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) that identified the project's mode, route, and preliminary station locations. The LPA has been endorsed by all local and regional governments along the corridor, and TriMet has received approval from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to enter the Project Development (PD) phase. Metro will lead the federally required National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process to evaluate the project's potential environmental impacts before construction begins. Following completion of this phase, partners will pursue a Federal Transit Administration Capital Investment Grant, which will be matched with regional and local funding.

TV Highway Transit and Safety Project construction is expected to begin in spring 2028. Service is expected to begin in fall 2030.
