82nd Ave Transit Project
We are upgrading bus service on 82nd Avenue to TriMet FX®–Frequent Express. This will bring more service reliability and faster travel times, plus safety and accessibility improvements, to the corridor.
Community Advisory Committee: Now accepting applications
The CAC will comprise a diverse group of individuals representing a variety of perspectives, including residents, business owners, transit riders and organizations that serve people who use 82nd Avenue and the project route.
Better Transit on 82nd
- Faster travel times with more reliable bus service.
- Buses arriving every 12 minutes or better.
- Longer, 60-foot, zero-emissions buses with multiple doors for briefer stops.
- Bus stations with weather protection, lighting, accessibility improvements, in close proximity to pedestrian crossings.
- Next-generation transit signal priority that prioritizes buses for faster trips.
- Improved connections to 20 other bus lines and three MAX lines with access to key destinations.
The 82nd Avenue Transit Project will bring high-capacity FX–Frequent Express bus service along SE 82nd Avenue, between Clackamas Town Center and the Cully neighborhood. This is based on a preliminary vote by the 82nd Avenue Transit Project Steering Committee. The new bus line will improve travel times and access to transit while providing better connections to jobs, schools, retail centers and other destinations along the route.
The project will improve transit service for our community and complement other investments already underway on 82nd Avenue as part of Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Building a Better 82nd project, including new pedestrian crossings, sidewalks, lighting, additional trees and other roadway upgrades. We will also partner with the Oregon Department of Transportation to develop safety and accessibility improvements in the corridor. Project costs are approximately $320 million.
The bus currently serving this corridor, Line 72, has the highest ridership of any route, with approximately 10,000 daily trips. However, Line 72 also has the most delays of any of our bus lines, due to congestion on 82nd Avenue. The new FX line would use the same route as today's Line 72 between Clackamas Town Center and the Cully neighborhood*.
The new bus service will speed up trips, provide more reliability and maintain existing connections to MAX Blue, Green and Red Lines and the 20 other intersecting bus lines along 82nd Avenue.
Route
The 82nd Avenue Transit Project will connect Clackamas Town Center and the Cully neighborhood*. The new FX line on 82nd Ave will share some stops currently served by Line 72 for easy transfers.
This route is based on a preliminary vote by the Steering Committee. A final vote is expected in early 2025.
Zero-Emissions Buses
As part of our goal of moving to a 100% zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040, the project will include fuel-cell electric buses powered by hydrogen. The 60-foot, high-capacity buses will be based out of TriMet’s future Columbia Operations Facility in Northeast Portland.

The project Steering Committee will vote on a final Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) that will include the project routing, termini and preliminary station locations in winter 2025. Then, local and regional governments will be asked to approve the LPA. After the LPA is approved, project partners will complete a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process to qualify for federal funding. Partners will then pursue a Federal Transit Administration Capital Investment Grant, matched by other regional and local funding.
82nd Avenue Transit Project construction is expected to begin in 2027. Service is expected to begin in summer 2029.
