On-demand shared ride service in Gresham

TriMet NEXT is a new on-demand transit shared ride service that we are piloting for people who live, work, play and go to school in the Powell Valley and South Gresham areas. The Neighborhood Express Transit (NEXT) shuttles connect you to the people and places in your neighborhood, including other bus and MAX lines at nearby transit centers. You can request a ride on NEXT using the NEXT app during service hours, and we’ll come to you for curb-to-curb service!

  4. icon showing two map markers connected with a dotted line Get dropped off

The NEXT service is available to riders who are older adults or people with disabilities traveling within the service zone shown on the map below. Riders who are eligible for LIFT paratransit service may travel in the entirety of the on-demand zone, and riders who are not eligible for LIFT may travel within the dark blue zone at the bottom of the service area pictured.

Trips are provided on smaller TriMet buses, and since this is public transit, you should expect a shared ride. All NEXT buses are wheelchair accessible and our vehicle operators will assist riders with mobility devices in securing their mobility device on-board. Additionally, NEXT buses come equipped with bike racks that can accommodate wider tire electric bikes. Bikes must be loaded and unloaded by the rider.

Map of NEXT Service Area highlighting the service area for LIFT-Eligible Riders and for General Public Riders, as described below.

Service for TriMet LIFT-Eligible Riders

Service is available to TriMet LIFT-eligible riders in the entirety of the area pictured in the map above, generally from SE 182nd avenue on the west, Interstate 84 (with a portion of NE Sandy between Fairview Avenue and NE 238th, to include the Walmart Supercenter and Wood Village Mobile Home park) on the north, down SE 257th avenue on the east to NE 8th street. The remainder of the LIFT-eligible rider zone is included in the description of the general public rider zone that follows.

Service for General Public Riders

For riders who are older adults (65+) and/or people with disabilities who are not currently eligible for LIFT paratransit service, the NEXT service zone extends from Jenne Road on the west, continuing to Eastman Parkway and rounding out on SW 5th avenue to the east. The eastern border of the general public zone is bordered by Hogan road from SW 5th Avenue to SE Palmquist, extending across the Mt. Hood Highway to SE 11th street up to SE Division.

TriMet bus lines 82-South Gresham and 84-Powell Valley/Orient Dr serve this area in peak morning and afternoon service on weekdays. The NEXT service will help connect riders mid-day and weekends to their community, as well as providing connections to more frequent fixed route services.

Please note: NEXT is a new, experimental on-demand shuttle service available only in the Powell Valley and South Gresham areas at this time. The TriMet NEXT app can only be used to request a ride on NEXT.

Booking a Trip

Customers can book their trip in three ways: through the mobile app, using our online booking portal on a computer, or by calling the TriMet NEXT program if you do not have a smartphone or computer access.

Using the app

Requesting a ride on NEXT is easy — here’s how it works:

  1. Download the TriMet NEXT app from the Apple Store or Google Play store
  2. On the day of your desired ride, use your smartphone app to book a trip like you would if you were ordering an Uber
  3. The app uses your location and matches you with a friendly NEXT driver who knows where to pick you up, at the curb of the address you provide
  4. Pay the regular TriMet fare on board using your Hop card, phone or contactless credit/debit card

What is On-Demand Transit?

TriMet NEXT On-Demand will help link riders to the larger public transit network and create more connections throughout the TriMet service district. TriMet NEXT On-Demand helps fill in the gaps by providing origin to destination public transportation in areas that may not have traditional fixed route bus service, or at times when buses and trains are not available.
